Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI)

ADI stands for “Acceptable Daily Intake,” which is a measure of the amount of a substance (such as a food additive) that can be ingested daily over a lifetime without an appreciable health risk. The ADI is determined by international scientific organizations, such as the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), based on a thorough evaluation of available data on the safety of the substance. The ADI represents the highest level of daily exposure that is likely to be without adverse effect and provides a basis for establishing the limits for the use of food additives in various food products.
